Subject :Copesetic is Closing after 31 Years... and selling off all of its equipment

The owners of Copesetic are retiring, after 31 years of prototyping, and selling all of the equipment, CNC machines, pressure tanks, Ashby Cross mixing dispensing machine and a great deal more. There is lots of stuff to get rid. Check out the attached list. Please write [email protected] with questions and offers or call 315-436-7780 (cell) and 315-684-7780 (office)

Also, we are looking to learn which shops are the best for appearance model fabricator and best part casting shops. Now that we are stepping down our customers will need us to refer them to one of the other great shop.

It's been fun!

Thank you!

Full Job Description

Formation is a product design and development group focused on human-centered design and new product innovation. We develop innovative new products and experiences for a broad range of clients in consumer, mobility, healthcare, and equipment markets.

We are seeking a prototyping specialist to support our world-class industrial design and engineering team. This individual is a hands-on, organized, and collaborative maker interested in working within a dynamic development environment to support the transformation of early-stage design and engineering insights into developmental prototypes and proof-of-concept demonstrators. Their work will be instrumental to our process as part of design studies, client reviews, or showcased at a number of global trade shows and venues (AIX, ISHLT, SEMA, CES, RSNA, etc.).

Formation typically engages early in the design process and stays involved until final solutions and design intent are established. To support this approach, we are looking for someone who can draw on a range of prototyping, fabrication, and problem-solving skills to contribute throughout the development process; someone comfortable with early-stage ambiguity and end-stage high fidelity. We will look to you not only to execute on fellow designer's and engineer's prototypes, but to contribute meaningful insights into appropriate materials, processes, assembly strategies, and best practices.

Beyond being proficient with a broad range of prototyping technologies, methods, and approaches, we expect you be a leader in our prototyping process and resources. Development, maintenance, and implementation of shop resources and organization systems is paramount. We expect you to be an advocate of best practices and high standards within our team to keep our prototyping capabilities at the highest level. Coordination with outside resources and suppliers will be expected as well to ensure multiple build activities can be conducted seamlessly and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Maintain ownership of the quality of Formation's prototyping services, the quality of model deliverables, and the successful delivery of client work.

• Set up, program, and produce parts using Fusion 360 CAM with a Haas CNC router. This includes any requisite fixturing setup and fabrication.

• Be an advocate and center of excellence for the team on shop best practices on tool use, safety, and organization.

• Work with Formation project leaders to coordinate one or more build activities at a time. This includes communicating resource utilization on a frequent basis, managing logistics for material procurement and outbound shipments, and maintaining and organizing build spaces.

• Partner with external prototype suppliers and model shops, both domestic and international, to determine the best use of resources to achieve desired model-making results.

• Manage, maintain, and clean shop equipment, workspaces, and resources to ensure smooth operation for all team members. Provides initiative for improving shop operation, cleanliness, and organization.

• Work with outside vendors, suppliers, and client resources to procure material, coordinate shipments, and augment prototyping capabilities.

• Develop and conduct shop training for all manual, power, and automated shop tools. Identify areas where additional outside training resources may be warranted to improve capabilities or efficacy.

• Follow trends and developments in the prototyping and fabrication world to recommend and implement improvements to Formation's in-house prototyping capabilities and outside resource relationships.

• Work collaboratively with individual Formation designers and engineers in the development of prototype models and mechanisms. Provide feedback and input in balancing fabrication fidelity, accuracy, lead time, cost, and in-house vs external capabilities to hone in on a final design.

Minimum Qualifications

•Professional prototyping and fabrication experience (a portfolio of professional work examples will be requested). Can demonstrate capability and sound judgment in a commercial environment.

•Strong knowledge of contemporary prototyping techniques (CNC machining, 3D printing, metal fabrication, use of modeling foam/tooling board, standard manual/power shop tools, etc.).

• Demonstrable CNC machining experience for a range of materials and fixturing systems. This includes aluminum, plywood, modeling foam, plastic, and sheet metal, among other materials.

• Experience with CNC 2D and 2.5D machining, as well as 3D surface machining techniques. 5-axis machining experience is a plus.

• Proficiency in contemporary CAM software for CNC programming. Fusion 360 is a plus.

• Understanding of the advantages, limitations, and appropriate use of 3D printing. Knowledge specifically of FDM 3D printing, slicer software such as Cura, and basic printer maintenance is a plus.

• Proficiency in a range of contemporary CAD software packages, such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, and Siemens NX. Basic parametric modeling, assembly modeling, and sheet metal experience is necessary.

• Experience executing prototype and fabrication work in accordance with proposals, resource plans, logistical constraints, and client/project requirements.

• Ability to interpret design and engineering input and provide meaningful collaborative input to achieve prototype and project goals. This may be rethinking a mechanism to work within fabrication capabilities, suggesting materials and processes to achieve desired fit and finish, or proposing alternative approaches to ensure a prototype meets objectives within resource constraints.

• Ability to work within time, budget, and fidelity constraints to achieve prototype goals for aesthetic, functional, or representative models.

• Ability to lead and organize large prototype build efforts within a team, and manage multiple build activities simultaneously.

• Ability to lead team efforts and provide training and guidance to less proficient shop users.

• Strong organizational skills with a process-oriented approach.

• Strong communication skills - verbal, written, and visual.

• An intuitive sensitivity to craft, fit, and finish.

I've been using Smartsheets (ZGF). We track both small projects on a master sheet, with associated task, and then more in-depth projects via independent sheets.

We currently use an access data base and SAP based system... which works, but no one is a fan of and has an insane number of clicks per hour to do anything. We are looking at switching to a custom made Smartsheet's system, should cut out a ton of non-value added time

I'm curious to know what software your shop is using to keep track of model builds, task assignments, time tracking, and etc.

I'm mostly interested to follow up with other shops using JIRA, as my manager and I have some questions, hoping to determine best practices by comparing with how other shops are handling certain aspects of the software.

That said, I'm also eager to hear what other software you've had success with. If you're not using a dedicated task management software, what other methods are you having success with?

Would love to hear from both corporate shops as well as independent firms on this. Thanks for any input you care to share!

We got this one via email...

Greetings,

I was wondering if anyone there has a source for small screws. I am looking for #1 wood or sheet metal screws, (Probably either might work), about 0.22 in long. Is there a store online or brick and mortar which sells these ?

Thanks so much for your time,
Ken Streib
