Hi Jeff,

We don't have many materials that we cut or etch on our laser that look similar enough to require an identification board to tell them apart, though I'll be very curious to see what your end design looks like when you're done. One of the workshops we're hoping to host at the Virtual Conference next April will feature a section on plastic identification, but we're still looking for a subject matter expert with practical knowledge to share on that front. Keep an eye out though.

What I can share is this, which is an example of a quick reference board we made, so our designers could quickly see what two common sample textures would look like engraved to different depths after the 3D printed material was engraved and painted. Found it to be a very useful reference as the designers would often go back and forth over fractions of a mm depth. This sample board has saved us a lot of evaluation prints over the years as they didn't have to ask for 5 different samples of the exact same print just so they could see how the texture would look at different depths.

Would be curious if anybody has a more direct answer to your question, or at least some other interesting reference boards or guides like this one to share.

Absolutely. My job was to support the designers at Honda. But my job title was not very descriptive: “Engineering Technician.” But I agree the word Digital should probably be in that job title.

I am working on an identification board for plastics that will hang next to our laser and material storage. Does anyone have any examples of what you have done in your shop? My board has spots for the 7 materials that we mainly cut plus space for the physical material to be attached.

Topic : Soft Touch Top Coats - Recommendations?

For mocking up overmolds on consumer electronic models, we used to use Akzo Nobel's soft touch finish (can't remember the name of it, it's been years ago). It was reliable and had a great feel after it dried. Sadly, they went to a model where they wouldn't sell it in anything less than a 50-gallon drum, and we couldn't even get through a 5-gallon can of it before it'd go bad on us. Good as it was, we just weren't willing to see that much product go to waste. So we switched to Alsa's soft touch offering. We've never liked the cured feel of it as much though, and have noticed more issues with it not curing properly as we've worked with it longer.

I'm just wondering if anybody else out there is having good results with any soft-touch topcoats from other manufacturers. We need to be able to buy it in realistic model shop quantities (no more than 5 gallons at a time), and it needs to minimally impact the color of the painted surface below it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just saw a job posting on LinkedIn for a Design Fabricator at Ford. However, the job was to "fabricate" digital files. While this is a legit job for a model maker with experience in CAD, I think the job title is confusing. People who make models, exhibits, engineering prototypes, film props and sets could be described as Design Fabricators, Design Visualizers, Design Implementers and maybe others? I feel like if the job is exclusively digital, there might need to be a "Virtual" or "Digital" chucked in there somehow. Does anybody else think that Design (something) is a good description for Model Makers?

They look to have a lot of options for forming and shaping, which is nice if your in-house metal forming capabilities are limited. We've got some similar outfits in the Kansas City Metro area like Metal Cut to Length, Metal by the Foot, and Metal Supermarkets, but their processing capabilities seem limited compared to what that outfit is showing. Pretty useful if you're in the Albuquerque area. Wonder if any other members would care to share their own go-to metal suppliers in other regions?

Hi All,

I just heard about New Mexico Metals, who have no minimum orders and will cut to size. Imagine not having to paw through Home Depot's little cubbies and tubes hoping what you need is in there! If anyone has any experience with these guys, or an alternative, please respond. Thanks!
