Thrice bitten, still not shy!

A few words from the APMM's new President

SUBMITTED BY MICHAEL SCRIBNER

Greetings! I’d like to welcome you to our first newsletter of the 2022-2024 term, and my first letter as APMM president. I’m Michael, and I’m a senior prototype specialist at Garmin International, an amazing company that’s been kind enough to keep me around for the past 17 years. I’ve been a member of the APMM since 2009. I’ve been a board member since 2018, serving two terms as Secretary. My wife Katie and I serve as guardians to four furry feline overlords, who mean the world to us. At various points in my life, I’ve been bitten by a goose, a penguin, and a giraffe (I tend to avoid zoos altogether at this point). I love crafting things of beauty out of metal and wood. I’m a fan of gaming, science fiction and many other things commonly referred to as “nerdy.” I also love working in our flowerbeds on a spring day, birding, and hiking in forests and mountains as often as possible. It’s my pleasure and an honor to be entrusted with the role of president for a time, and I thank you all for giving me the opportunity to serve.

Now that you know a bit about me, let’s talk about the organization that unites us. As you may well imagine, the pandemic times were no kinder to the APMM than they were to any other professional organization featuring an in-person conference as a cornerstone of its membership cycle. One mere week before our much-anticipated 2020 Seattle conference, we were forced to cancel the event. Were it not for our amazing and understanding membership, a resourceful and determined board of directors, and the leadership acumen of former president Jill Kenik, this organization may not be here today. As it is, I’m happy to report that we are, in fact, still here, and doing pretty well, all things considered.

I hope that at some point during the last few years, you attended one of our virtual conferences. These events brought many of us together when we could not be together in person, giving us much of the education, networking, shop talk and tour opportunities of an in-person conference, without the travel. Still, there’s something about the energy and interactions of the live conference that cannot be recreated any other way. I know many of you agree with this sentiment. Which is why I’m happy to let you know that we’ll be resuming our in-person conference in March of 2023, in the great city of Dayton, Ohio.

You should know that this volunteer board is working hard to give you the best member experience we can, with a variety of offerings to enrich your mind, foster community, and provide opportunities for learning and growth. I feel strongly that an organization such as ours – no matter how hard the board works – will only thrive with an active and engaged member base. Please check out how you can connect this summer and beyond, and consider participating. I look forward to the coming months and seeing what we build together, both as a board, and as a community. I’m glad you’re here to build it with us and look forward to getting to know more of you better.

Regards,

Michael Scribner
APMM President
