APMM vendor Reynolds Advanced Materials just acquired Eager Polymers, supplier of polyester resin for casting applications. They added fiberglass and other accessories as well as epoxies, urethane and silicone rubber products to their line in the late 1980’s. Eager Polymers will be doing business as Castolite, based out of Chicago. Maybe they can help.

Sharon and Matt, thank you for the suggestions. Definitely some avenues to chase down there.
Sharon, yes, we're looking to create opaque solid colors. |

I have. Although I was matching paint chips or material samples rather than Pantone. I don’t think my favorite source of dyes and pigments is in business anymore, but to give you a hint of where to start, they catered to the special effects industry. You might check with our vendors Silpak and Reynolds to see if they carry other brands of pigments. I’ve also used powdered pigments from art supplies stores, and I’ve also raided the paint department’s supply of tints and pearls. We had en entire department devoted to color and trim, and my group worked with them frequently. I assume you need a solid color. Dealing with translucent colors is a whole different ballgame.
Here one company that I used, but you’ll have to call them since their site is under construction:

Hi Michael,
In the past our urethane suppliers (Rampf) would custom color match a material for us. |

Anybody out there ever had cause to create flexible cast parts that are near approximations of Pantone colors? If so, what were your preferred pigments to create the custom color match? I'm thinking we'd have an awfully hard time approximating a Pantone color with the limited palette offered by the Smooth-On So-Strong tint line, just wondered if anybody has had success using other dyes or inks that offer a broader range of base colors to work from? |
