Job summary

To support two areas of R&D function – Modelshop & test lab, this resource will be split across these areas with business priorities and resource capacity dictating the proportion spent in each area during the week.

The R&D Technician will support the production of all physical samples required to support development projects. These may be manufactured internally or outsourced as required. The prototypes could be used for aesthetic, engineering or material evaluation.

The R&D Technician will support product validation through carrying out all physical tests following documented test methods to perform accurate and repeatable tests by safely operating precision instruments and complex test devices. Monitor and record the condition of the product before, during and upon completion of the tests. Analyse and present test results using simple descriptive statistics, computer software, graphs, and tables.

The R&D Technician must be able to work under pressure and deliver results based on short lead times, building relationships with external suppliers and internal functions to leverage when required.


Specific responsibilities

• Support the Modelshop Manager in the production of all prototyping samples required to support development projects.

• Use of all Model shop equipment to support prototyping
• Control waste streams ensuring adherence to environmental initiatives including waste segregation and COSHH

• Responsible for performing routine maintenance or minor repairs on test machines.
• Support the Conformance Manager in internal product testing Support product validation through carrying out all physical tests following documented test methods conducting tests according to established objectives and worldwide standards (i.e. BS EN, Herman Miller Test Methods, ANSI/BIFMA, etc.).

• Analyse and present test results using simple descriptive statistics, computer software, graphs, and tables.

• Complete Test Write formal documents (approximately one per day) that accurately represent the test data and conditions.

• Work with engineering personnel to develop new Test Methods and standards.

• Accurately communicate test progress and/or results to management and customers.

• Review and approve peer test results and reports.

Job holder requirements

Ideally 3-4 years’ experience in professional industrial model making/prototyping.

Preferred:
Degree level qualification in modelmaking or a technical subject, or equivalent


• Good communication skills

• Self starter with good time management

• Confident, optimistic and with the stamina and drive to meet targets as coping with sustained and changing job demands.


Skills in the following areas are essential:

• Capable of using all types of hand and power tools associated with the production of prototypes, e.g. bench drill, circular saw, band saw, radial/chop saw, routers, lathe, machine mills, all types of sanding equipment including power files and ‘dremel’; bench hand tools such as chisels, hand plane, hand saws etc.

• Capable of using rapid prototype equipment such as FDM printer

• A good working knowledge of MS Excel and Word


Skills in the following areas are preferred:

• Experience of using vacuum forming, vacuum casting, wet spray finishing, MIG/TIG welding of steel and aluminium.

• Experience of sheet metal fabrication

• The ability to manipulate CAD data.
