We are looking for a talented Prototype Developer 2 to help us take on the additional projects and support the company growth. In this role, you will produce highly detailed models, prototype parts and mock-ups according to requirements, goals and objectives set by the Prototype Development Team Leader, Designers and Engineering. You will collaborate with Designers, Engineering, and Marketing, to explore, innovate, and execute world-class solutions. You will utilize your knowledge of fabrication processes, software, 3D printing and shop tools to achieve project goals and high-quality standards.

  • Leads and takes ownership for small moderately complex projects and/or sub-projects as part of a greater project guiding the direction of the project to obtain design intent and adherence to project budget and schedule
  • Manages multiple significant tasks concurrently and completes them in the required time frames
  • May assist with estimations of effort level for a task and/or project
  • Collaborates and adds value in design reviews
  • Understands clients’ needs as they relate to model making and/or prototyping and demonstrates proficient model finishing skill set in project tasks
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Model Shop safety procedures for shop and individual tool use
  • Leverages PC based computer knowledge in Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator and applies it to projects
  • Demonstrates ability to complete well defined moderately complex tasks and/or projects

Qualifications
Qualified candidates possess an Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Model Making, or another field relevant to the essential functions of this job description from a two or four-year college or university OR a minimum of 3 years work experience as a Prototype Developer at Garmin AND a minimum of 3 years’ prototype or model making experience performing a role substantially similar to the essential functions of this job description. Other requirements include:
  • Must demonstrate proficient understanding and experience with a variety of materials such as model board, wood, metal, plastics, urethanes, and similar materials
  • Demonstrated knowledge of model shop equipment such as saws, milling machines, routers, jointers, drill presses, sanders and hand tools
  • Demonstrated PC-based computer knowledge as it applies to model making, such as use of Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator for prototyping projects
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficient model building, fabrication, project organization, and communication skills.
  • Must be detail oriented, have a committed work ethic, and be a strong problem solver.
  • Ability to understand clients’ needs as they relate to model making and/or prototyping
  • Ability to act as project lead who guides the direction of projects to obtain design intent
  • Ability to estimate the level of effort for a task, and adhere to schedule and budget
  • Proficiency in shop processes (carpentry, machining, heat forming, fixtures, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Model Shop safety procedures for shop and individual tool use
  • Must demonstrate an understanding and experience with a variety of materials such as model board, wood, metal, plastics, urethanes, and similar materials
  • Working knowledge of paints, coatings to replicated manufactured finishes
  • Able to explore a wide variety of prototype solutions, colors, finishes and materials
  • Proficiency in general computer skills, PC / Windows environment experience
  • General knowledge and usage of SolidWorks or other 3D design software
  • Basic knowledge of tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite.
  • A love for trends, technology, and an active lifestyle
  • Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude, and work respectfully with others
  • Experience running 3D printing systems such as Stratasys (Polyjet), Carbon3D M1 (CLIP), and FDM is a plus, in addition to experience with Epilog lasers.
