Funny! I lived on Cooney Street, around the corner from the Thirsty Scholar. Some good friends of mine live on Concord Ave. I couldn't find the contact for Harvard, but I will email you the contact at MIT. |

Ernest-If you are looking for a lower end desktop machine with quick delivery, I'd have a look at Full Spectrum's Muse. Get in touch with Tood Fisher [email protected]
Having studied many lasers in the low end of the market, I had settled on purchasing the Muse before I came across my Epilog barn find. Seemed to be a good choice in the $5K and under market. Their response time on my first contact was about 15 minutes at 7AM, so they get points for being interested in selling. (I'm still waiting for a call back from Universal).
Put in a good word for APMM if you speak with them--been trying to get them to join us in Seattle. |

Patrick,
Thank you for the response. By the way, I got a model making position with Safdie Architects in Somerville and moved here two months ago. And yes, that's what we did yesterday, and visited a makerspace near our office, but most of the makerspaces around here don't allow us to cut PETG or styrene which are the materials we use most. We will probably have to look for a cheaper laser to use at the meantime but because the shop just recently acquires the J750 printer, so we are not sure whether the company would allow us to spend the money to get a new laser.
Charles,
Thank you for the response. Haha, yes we did ask our local ULS dealer, unfortunately they just sold their floor model to someone 3 months ago, and they are not looking into selling the one they have now.
Julie,
Thank you for the response. Haha, that's actually where I live now, between Inman Square and Dali, and my office is only 5 minutes walk away. My colleague mentioned that too but I think they are all gone by now. Do you have their contact information? Might worth for us to just check it out. |

Somerville! I used to live over by Inman Sq. Last year, both Harvard and MIT were looking to offload some laser cutters. Not sure if they are still looking for buyers, but let me know if you want any contact info, and I can dig that up. |

Ernest,
When this happen to us we drove down to the Universal dealer with a van and purchased their floor model. The were more than happy to sell it to us. If your office has had 20 years on the old one, it should hopefully not be too big a stretch to justify a new one.

There are some independent shops in the N-east that may job this for you.
What about buying a cheap cutter to tie you over until you get the Universal repaired/replaced??
Otherwise, the Makerspace seems like the best option.
Getting a loaner/renter seems like a tough ask... |

Hi all,
The 20 years old Universal Laser in my model shop just died (motherboard is bad and will have to send it in for repair-laser doesn't move on X-Axis, so it might take a week or so), and we have multiple projects that require us to use the laser machine. Our model shop is located at Somerville, MA, does anyone has any suggestions on anyplace that we can get a used lasercut machine quickly or a place that we can rent a lasercut machine?
We did look into getting a new machine as well but because it's usually custom-built to the customer's needs, it'll take a few weeks to get a new machine, so that is a no go.
We are looking into using the two makerspaces that are two blocks away from our office, but it'll be easier if we have machine that we can use at the shop.
Thank you all! |
