Dayton taught the world to fly! It’s known as the Birthplace of Aviation and was formally recognized as such by Congress in 2003. It was home to Orville and Wilbur Wright, the famed founders of modern flight who designed and tested the first powered aircraft in Dayton before taking it on its first flight in Kitty Hawk. Since the Wright Brothers’ first flight, Dayton has also been the starting point of many modern aviation innovations and includes two of the nation’s most well-known aviation sites: the National Museum of the US Air Force and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Dayton originated many entrepreneurial ideas and innovations that have shaped the world as we know it today. In fact, before Silicon Valley took the spotlight, Dayton was known as the home of innovation in the United States. It had more patents per capita than any other city in America! Throughout the 19th and 20th century, Dayton produced a constant stream of inventions, including the cash register, the electric wheelchair, the pop-top beverage can, the parking meter, the stepladder, and the self-starting automobile ignition.

Dayton is located at the “Crossroads of America” the intersection of I-75 N/S & I-70 E/W.  The Dayton International Airport is serviced by major carriers and is easy to get to and through! Dayton is also one of the nation’s Top 10 “90 Minute Markets,” where nearly 6 million people can reach it in 3 hours by car. It offers big city amenities such as a vibrant downtown, unique shopping, dining and nightlife, while maintaining that small-town midwestern charm.

Our Conference Headquarters will be the Radisson Hotel - Dayton Convention Center

The Radisson is located just a block from the city’s Historic Oregon District, a lively spot lined with unique store fronts, excellent restaurants, and brewpubs - all within a short walk of the hotel. You'll see lots of public art, a city garden, some history, all while having fun and feeling safe. The hotel itself has a top-floor bar/restaurant for our after-hours brainstorming/networking needs.

APMM Conferences are rooted in the exchange of information and key learnings between our members. Consider harnessing your experiences, knowledge and ideas and present a workshop! We offer $100 cash-in-hand for our workshop presenters, door-prizes and a wide variety of learning opportunities to make your attendance an enriching experience. If you have a topic that you'd like to see presented - even if you don't want to present it - let us know that, too.

Together, we make our Conferences the best place to learn, share, and participate in hands-on activities, while you network and interact with your peers. For many model makers who work alone or in smaller organizations, conferences are a rare opportunity to meet and get to know other professionals and colleagues. Strategic alliances, friendships and professional networks are formed and strengthened that make the world of model making more supportive and mutually beneficial.

We are planning some early-bird discounts for those who register in advance. Use up your 2022 travel and conference allocations. We're even offering a budget-friendly payment plan for those who want to spread out their cost of attending. Watch for announcements on those soon!

We hope you'll join us in Dayton!

Details you'll need to know for CONF2023

SUBMITTED BY SAMANTHI MARTINEZ,  EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It’s hard to believe five years have passed since we gathered in Grand Rapids - and harder still to believe that this little organization has been around for thirty years! From the earliest days, the importance of getting together, discussing the state of the industry, and learning from others has been the hallmark (and purpose) of the APMM.

Here are the details, at a glance:

  • Dates: March 10-13, 2023
  • Hotel rate: $134/night + tax
  • Amenities: hotel shuttle, free parking, WIFI, walk to restaurants, and more
  • Registration: $650/professional, $550/educator, $700/vendor, $250/student
  • What's in store: 2 days of workshops + lunch, 2 days of optional tours + lunch, industry expo, welcome reception with pizza and local brews
  • Industry-specific presenters and speakers (TBA soon!)
  • Displays and demos by vendors and suppliers

My own history goes back to the first Conference my husband Duane attended in Redondo Beach in 1997. It was a life-altering event for him and his career. As a staff member since 2001 and Executive Director since 2005, I’ve seen many changes and developments (and I’m not even talking about technology!).

Over the years, the APMM and its members have gained trust in one another, agreed that a common interest is enough to create a colleague, and found that Conferences aren’t optional and costly boondoggles, but are true opportunities to benchmark, recharge, create contacts and reconnect. Conferences are truly greater than the sum of their parts.

For 2023, we understand the challenges you face, acknowledge the great responsibility of providing value, and know that these biennial meetings are helping to drive the profession and your professional development

We are holding registration rates steady, keeping our tried-and-true schedule, and doing our best to provide the return-on-investment that every attendee counts on. If there’s something you’d like to see, feel free to contact me at [email protected]. The APMM is YOUR community!
