Opportunity:
Radio Flyer is seeking an outstanding Prototype Engineer with 3+ years of experience developing prototypes for consumer products. This person will play a key role in the Product Development Prototype Studio located at the company’s headquarters on the Northwest side of Chicago. The prototype engineer works closely with Designers and Engineers to create rough mock-ups, functional prototypes and finished (presentation quality) prototypes.

Specific responsibilities include:
• Fabricating, machining, welding, finishing, painting, texturing and assembly.
• Develop prototypes of different levels of finish throughout the entire product development process (rough mock-ups, conceptual models, ergonomic testing prototypes, engineering testing models, electronic breadboards, and mechanical assemblies to demonstrate mechanisms.
• Create rapid prototypes using Objet 3D printer and 3-axis CNC vertical machining centers.
• Develop prototypes using a variety of materials including different densities of foam, fabric, wood, plastic, metal and other materials.
• Collaborate with designers and engineers to brainstorm solutions to design challenges. Create proof of concepts for efficient evaluation.
• Coordinate model making activities with inside and outside resources to meet required deadlines.
• Innovate in prototype build techniques to expand our capabilities and continue to push the boundaries of creating prototypes that are a closer approximation of the final product.
• Help maintain a safe, clean and organized shop environment.

Requirements (Commitment-Personality-Technical):
• Associates degree required. Bachelor’s degree in Prototype Engineering, Industrial Design or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in model making/prototype building and finishing.
• Experience in advanced finishing techniques required to complete presentation models: fabricating, sanding, polishing, painting, texturing and assembly with extreme attention to detail.
• CAD/CAM (Surfcam or Mastercam preferred), Solidworks experience would be a plus.
• Skilled at visualizing 3-dimensional parts from mechanical drawings, hand sketches or CAD files.
• Team player and safety focused.
• Expert shop skills and vast experience working with a variety materials and both power and hand tools.
• Excellent communication skills (written, oral and sketching).
