President's Letter: Plant the Seeds of Involvement!

Peter Mack, President APMM

Get Involved in the APMM!

Even though it’s mid-February here in Michigan as I write this, it feels more like mid-April. The sun is out and the grass is brown but visible, with no snow in sight. This is not exactly your typically Michigan winter… I prefer my February's with snow measured in feet. A year from now we will be getting ready for the 2018 conference in Grand Rapids. Plans are currently underway with visiting hotels, touring meeting spaces and proposing, reviewing and updating the conference schedule.

So using this springlike theme, I would like to plant the seeds for your involvement in the conference. You can start by making a commitment to going. It’s a great way to revitalize your connections with the model making community and come away with the energy to refocus on your craft. I also hope that you will start to think about how you can help make the 2018 conference one of the best. You can contribute by offering your knowledge and leading a workshop. Many of our members are truly experts in their field of model making and while they might think that they have nothing to offer, that really couldn’t be further from the truth. That one technique you have mastered could be the single piece of the puzzle someone else needs to advance. So I really hope you consider sharing your knowledge with the rest of us - it’s what makes our conferences uniquely great.

I’d like to plant another seed for some of you to step up and join the leadership of the APMM. By the time the conference comes around I will have been President for two terms - 4 years. It doesn’t really seem like it but the time has really gone by quickly. Next year, it will be time for me to move on and for someone else to lead and advance the APMM in new directions. I can say that I’ve truly enjoyed being President. It has helped me grow not only professional but personally too. Many of the board positions are a great way to get involved and stretch your leadership legs.

Now, I’m sure that I’ll be out shoveling snow soon enough but I’m just as sure spring is near and things will start to grow again. I hope that you will consider growing with the APMM and contributing your knowledge or leadership to help our organization flourish.

Thanks,
Pete
